To avoid damage to the coil stock when it is necessary to change the position of the coil from horizontal to vertical, a rotating device (upender) is employed.

The coil is placed in a horizontal position on the table of the Upender and the table is rotated through a 90° arc using a hydraulic drive mechanism. The coil is now in a vertical position for loading on the coil reel.

Coil upenders are available in sizes that can handle coils up to 50000 lbs.
